About us
The Yarn & Yathra House was founded to preserve Bhutan's weaving traditions and bring them into contemporary homes around the world.
From our atelier in Thimphu, the capital city of the Kingdom of Bhutan, we work with skilled women artisans who continue the centuries-old practice of weaving yathra on traditional wooden looms. Each textile is woven by hand, carrying with it generations of knowledge and a craft that remains deeply rooted in everyday life.
The Yathra Tradition
Originating in the mountain valleys of Bumthang, yathra is one of Bhutan's most treasured textile traditions. For generations, women have woven sheep and yak wool into textiles that provided warmth through the Himalayan winters and supported rural households.
Our collections honour this heritage through traditional Bhutanese motifs, many of which symbolise protection, prosperity, harmony and good fortune. Alongside these, we create contemporary designs inspired by the mountains, rivers and quiet landscapes of the Himalayas.
Our Approach
As the pace of modern life accelerates and fast fashion places speed before quality, we continue to weave as the craft has always been practised; with patience. The process begins with the careful selection of colours and motifs. From weaving and finishing to cross-stitching, every stage is completed by hand. Depending on the piece, the process may take several days or several weeks to complete.
No two textiles are ever the same. Small variations in weave, form and finish are a natural expression of the hand that made them, giving every piece its own unique character.

Many of our artisans have been part of our journey for several years, the pieces you see are the imprint of their hands, their experience and the time they dedicate to creating it.
For us, preserving yathra weaving means caring for the people who carry it forward. We provide long-term employment, fair wages, flexible working arrangements and continued opportunities to develop their skills, allowing our artisans to continue their craft while supporting their families.
